Types of Domestic Abuse

Domestic abuse can come in many forms. In order to better understand the wide range of personal abuses that can occur, we have included definitions of different types.

Physical Abuse: Forceful physical behavior that accidentally or intentionally causes bodily harm or property damage. Includes any behavior that limits necessary resources to maintain health.

Sexual Abuse: Forced or coerced sexual behavior done in order to gain power or control. Includes any actions that humiliate/demean an individual regarding the body or undermine another person’s sexuality.

Psychological/Emotional Abuse: Repeated hurtful interactions (verbal or physical) with the intent to erode self-esteem. Includes ridicule, intimidation or coercion.

Identity Abuse: Using personal characteristics to undermine and manipulate. Includes racism, sexism and ageism.

Economic/Financial Abuse: The use or misuse of financial or monetary resources of a partner without consent. Includes jeopardizing employment, forging a signature, refusing to work and stealing.
